Photographing hair is very important for stylists. It allows to show the true colors of hair in photographs. It is also essential because photography has enormous power and can take you far as a hairstylist.
Prominent Toronto beauty and fashion photographer Babak, who has worked with many Contessa Award entrants was featured on ScissorBoy’s online cosmetology program. He along with Mickey Svircevic explained the importance of photographing your work.
Mickey and Babak took us behind the scenes at a photo shoot and gave us some pointers on how to photograph your work! Both were of the opinion that by photographing your work, you can capture time and styles which may be used as a reference.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when having a photo shoot is that you will most likely not know what the photo shoot will entail. Mickey says you must “go with the flow” and that it all starts with the photographer.
Babak mentions that the right photographer will get your whole look and bring it all together for you. As a hairstylist, make sure that you explain your objectives to your photographer. If the photographer does not understand your needs and objectives, he may not be able to capture the important thing(s) that you wish to depict through your work.
All the pieces of the puzzle need to come together, like styles, colors and makeup. But if you put your mind to it, you can pull anything off and get an amazing photo shoot showcasing your look. One important tip that Babak shared on the Cutting Edge Hair Show was to always go with the flow of hair while doing a photo shoot. Going against it would never work.

Photography is an art and not science and hence perceptions (about hair) differ from one individual to another. However, every stylist must photograph his/her work to allow their creativity to reflect via photographs.
